Lily is a 52-minute one-woman play about Edna, who at age 16 was transported from Ungvar, Hungary, to Auschwitz with her entire family. Lily is playwright/performer Karine Koretīs grandmotherīs true-life experience in the Holocaust. Edna, formerly known as Lily, connected with four schoolmates at the first selection in Auschwitz. Her charm, inner strength and sense of humor shone as she journeyed through this horrible atrocity. After the four young women lost their families to the crematoriums, they were able to find refuge in the company, warmth and laughter they shared. Bringing this story to the stage took over three years of interviews, and despite the nightmares, loneliness, isolation and stress that Edna experienced during the process, she still wanted audiences to leave this performance knowing that even through unspeakable tragedy, the spirit can prevail. Korets personal mission is to spread a message of tolerance and share some intimate history with her audience. Since 1999, Lily has been performed around the US, Canada and Mexico. In 2001, Koret performed Lily for her grandmother in Israel.
Lily was specifically written to be performed in synagogues, hillels, churches, sisterhood groups, hadassah groups, holocaust history programs and students, social ministries, and any group that would like to see an inspirational and historical work.
